Vegan fried fish made from banana blossoms! It might sound strange at first, but it’s the best and most authentic vegan fried fish recipe that exists! My tender, simple banana blossom fried fish, crispy and crunchy in it’s beer batter, is in no way inferior to the original.
My simple, fantastic, authentic banana blossom fried fish simply smells wonderfully sea-like. And then there’s its tender, meaty texture! Soft yet fibrous, like real fish. The only thing missing are the bones, but I don’t think anyone will miss biting on one of those!

How do you come up with the idea of making vegan fish from banana blossoms?
I used canned banana blossoms for a Thai curry a while ago and discovered that they had a tender, meaty, fibrous texture. So I bought some more from the Asian market to experiment further. And what can I say: this beer-battered fried fish is simply amazing!
If you already know and like my other vegan fish recipes, then you’ll love this vegan fried fish! There’s nothing more authentic in the vegan fish world!

Fried Fish in Beer Batter – Authentic and Purely Plant-Based
Of course, I bake my vegan banana blossom fried fish in crispy beer batter, just like the classic recipe. It sticks to the fish so well because I replace the eggs with chickpea flour (also called gram flour). This works just as well, and no chicken has to sacrifice an egg for it.

What’s the best way to serve fried fish, or banana blossom fried fish?
Personally, I prefer to eat my vegan fried fish as vegan English fish and chips with fries and malt vinegar!
But whether as a snack or a full meal, you can serve vegan fried fish just like real fried fish. With all sorts of side dishes, just the way you like it.
Here are some ideas for serving vegan banana blossom fish:
- As fish and chips with chunky fries and English malt vinegar.
- As a fried fish sandwich, with lettuce, cucumber, onions, and sauce in a bun.
- With homemade vegan remoulade or mayonnaise for dipping.
- With a squeeze of fresh lemon.
- With potatoes and dill sauce.
- With vegetables and potatoes as side dishes.
